When to Purchase

Mobile surveillance technology has been developing extremely fast over the last few years. Whether tiny developments, like a new connector, or huge innovations like MPEG4 compression, mobile surveillance has been changing at a rapid pace. It can be intimidating to know how to get into the market, when to upgrade, what to buy and when.

when_to_buy_calendarOn one hand prices go down the longer a piece of technology is on the market but on the other hand innovations are also being constantly introduced.

With better products and lower prices on offer, it begs the question:“When should we buy?”

That’s not the last question to ask yourself. Take the time to think more about what your needs are:

Do I need the system today?

If no, then it may be better to wait, but keep in mind what you are waiting for. If the product meets your needs now, why wait? Don’t make a decision to buy or not buy based on what technology might hit the market in the future. Don’t worry about obsolescence – technology such as a Seon system has a long shelf life and has options to upgrade to newer technology.

Do I want the newest technology?

There are pros and cons to going with the latest innovation on the market. It may give you an extra year or two of useful service, but there are often compatibility glitches to work through – like when Microsoft offers a new operating system, unfamiliar programs to learn and typically higher upfront costs. Often waiting, sometimes as little as six months, can make a huge difference. This gives you and the manufacturers of related products extra time to prepare for the new product.

What is happening in the industry?

When to BuyIn the past consumers have invested in products before they were proven. Manufacturers may not have established what is the superior technology or what the industry standard will be. Think of Betamax videotape – a classic case but by no means rare. The first on the market was also the first to leave, as VHS became the industry standard.

With competing technologies in an emerging field you don’t want to be wrapped up with unintended obsolescence.

Evaluate the features you want and prioritize them to figure what is essential and what would be the perfect system. Speak to other people in the transportation industry to find out what works for them and what has brought challenges. Speak to dealers and sales representatives. At Seon Mobile Surveillance, sales executives have the industry knowledge to compare and contrast other systems on the market. Ask for a demo system so you can experience the product first hand.

Be aware of the risks and the benefits. Take the time to ensure you are satisfied with the product and feel secure that it will meet your budget. With whatever decision you make, regardless of features, start with – and stay with – your needs.
