Computer Challenges with HD Readers

With any technical system there can be technical challenges. A digital surveillance recording system and reader station such as the Seon Explorer or Seon Trooper, have numerous parts and numerous connections to and from the systems.

Often difficulties encountered reviewing and downloading footage can be traced back to connections, power supply or the computer itself. If just one is misconfigured, the system may not work as it should.

The Seon Service Team has put together a number of tips to help troubleshoot computer issues related to the HD reader (HDR).

Proper Connections

It is important to double check the HD Reader and computer set-up.
Diagram

1. Connect the USB cable to the Reader and to a USB 2.0 port of a computer.

2. Connect the power supply to the Reader and to an electrical outlet.

3. Insert a hard drive into the slot on the front of the Reader and lock it in place with the key provided.

4. Turn the power switch at the back of the Reader ON.

5. When the USB icon appears in the taskbar, start the HD Reader program.

For more details about installing the HD Reader please refer to the Seon HD Reader Quick Reference Guide.

Tackling other challenges

If all the connections are correct, but the system is still not functioning properly there are other common issues worth troubleshooting.

Changes to the computer

    • Has new software been installed? The new program may be using computer resources so the HDR program cannot function as it should.

    • Have other USB devices been added since the reader was last used? This may prevent the computer from recognizing the HD Reader. Turn off your computer and reconnect the HD Reader as described above.

An error message pops up

  • The software program may have been started before the computer recognized the HDR. Close the software and wait until the HDR is properly connected and the USB icon appears in the taskbar before starting the software program.
Viewing challenges

  • “Invalid EDSR media.” This means the hard drive is blank. Was the HD properly locked in position in the recorder?

  • “Local File.” The HD software was opened prior to the HDR being connected and recognized by the computer – watch that the green arrow icon is displayed in the taskbar before opening the software.

  • “HDD Reader.exe has encountered problems.” Computer resources may be fully utilized by other programs and tasks. Close other non-essential programs and try again. It is also possible the C: drive is too fragmented. This can be easily fixed by right clicking on your C: drive, choosing properties, then choosing the system tools tab and then the “defragment now” button. Lastly, this message can occur when some computers have hyper-threading or duo-core enabled, and are trying to use older versions of the HDR software.
